5A STATE: Sanchez leads Copper Hills past Lone Peak in quarterfinals; Westlake outlasts Brighton in OT

SALT LAKE CITY — Preston Sanchez scored 25 points, including a game-high two 3-pointers, to lead Copper Hills to a stunning win over Lone Peak, 74-59, in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A boys basketball state tournament Thursday at the Huntsman Center.

Stockton Shorts added 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for the Grizzlies, which handed Region 4 champion Lone Peak its second loss to an in-state foe of the season.

Copper Hills (21-3) made 32 free throws to earn a win that saw three players foul out of the game and four more earn four fouls apiece. But the Grizzlies advanced to face Westlake in a 5A semifinal Friday at 5:50 p.m.

Charlie Olsen totaled 16 points and five rebounds for Copper Hills, and teammate Porter Hawkins added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Lone Peak's Frank Jackson poured in 38 points, but he was the only Knight to score in double figures. Tyson Doman had six points, nine rebounds and three steals for Lone Peak (21-5), which failed to make it back to the state championship game for the second-straight year after winning its last title in 2014.

WESTLAKE 54, BRIGHTON 48 — At the University of Utah, Asa McCord had 14 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals to help the Thunder outlast the Bengals in overtime Thursday.

Maizen Fausett finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for Westlake (19-6), which forced overtime when Chaz Ah You fouled on a fast break in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Ah You and Trenton Fullmer each finished with six points apiece for the Thunder.

Jake Fisher totaled 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Brighton (16-9), which got 13 points and 18 rebounds from Chayse Mims.
