SALT LAKE CITY — My family didn't get a dog until I was 12 years old. My mom grew up with an aversion to most animals, and it wasn't until she found a specific breed that she liked that she became open to the idea of pet ownership. Despite my oldest sister and brother having begged to get a dog when they were little, it was only when the youngest member of the family was a preteen that my parents gave the concept a green light.

We got our dog, Penny, just before school got out for the year, and my sister and I played with that puppy all summer long. We would watch her do everything, and my mom joked that Penny's feet never touched the floor because one of us was always holding her. We loved observing all of her idiosyncrasies, from chewing on all the house doorstoppers to running around in a panic when she would get her ears wet. I wish I had some of those behaviors on camera.

Reader Rhett Cram sent in this video of his dog, Trixie, feeling a little territorial over the new mattress pad and doing her best to keep cat Arya from sharing space, and it reminded me of the joy of pet ownership. It's one of those things that make us happy that moments like this are so easily caught on camera now.

We love when readers send in their videos, whether it's of pets, kids or timelapse footage of our beautiful Utah scenery. You can message them to us on the Have You Seen This? Facebook page or send them directly to atreasure@ksl.com.
