LA VERKIN, Washington County — A Washington County deputy was injured after a physical altercation with a man stopped for allegedly stealing a vehicle in La Verkin, Utah police said.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, just before 7 p.m., La Verkin Police were alerted that a vehicle was stolen in the area of 400 N. 100 East when a man identified as Ryan Pittman took $200 in cash and a vehicle he was unauthorized to use from a family member. He fled the scene in said vehicle, according to Chief Benjamin Lee of the La Verkin Police Department.

A Springdale Police Department officer spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling through Rockville but was unable to stop the driver before it returned to La Verkin, Lee said.

A Washington County deputy then spotted Pittman driving the vehicle in question when Pittman returned it to the original residence in La Verkin. The deputy attempted to apprehend Pittman and a physical altercation ensued, injuring the acting deputy, authorities said. He was taken to an area hospital.
