SALT LAKE CITY — Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worship in a variety of buildings around the globe.

Temples, tabernacles and meetinghouses serve different purposes, but they all help people come closer to God, according to the LDS Church.

Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the most sacred places on Earth. Temples are used for the highest sacraments of the faith, which includes marriage ceremonies that are believed to be eternal.

Following a temple dedication, only devout Latter-day Saints "who observe the basic principles of the faith" can attend the temple, according to the LDS Church.

On the contrary, church meetinghouses are open to the general public for activities, meetings and Sunday services. In the 19th century, Latter-day Saints called their meetinghouses different things, including tabernacles.

Tabernacles are used for Sunday worship services and are community gathering places. Concerts, school graduations, choral programs, lectures and funerals all take place at tabernacles.

Beginning in the 1960s, contemporary meetinghouses largely replaced tabernacles.

Take a look at these photos of temples, meetinghouses and tabernacles throughout Utah and the world.
