BOX ELDER COUNTY — Both directions of US-89/91 were closed in Sardine Canyon after a fatal crash Wednesday morning, officials said.
A 2003 Suzuki XL7 was traveling north on US-91 at the mouth of Sardine Canyon near Mantua when it lost traction on the icy, wet road at about 3:30 a.m., according to investigators. The SUV crossed over the median into oncoming traffic, where it was broadsided by a semitruck that was hauling a container.
A second vehicle, a 2012 Mercedes ML-350, also crashed into the SUV, according to UHP.
The driver of the SUV, 23-year-old Joshua Diamond, died from injuries sustained during the accident, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. He was from West Jordan and enrolled at Utah State University as a student.
The two occupants of the Mercedes — a 39-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy— and the 67-year-old semitruck driver sustained minor injuries, according to officials.
Investigators said they believe the driver of the SUV may have been driving too fast for the conditions. Diamond was wearing his seatbelt and was not driving impaired, according to UHP.
US-89/91 was closed for several hours until the crashes were cleared just after 11 a.m.
