DUCHESNE — The shop where a Duchesne man makes wooden toys to donate to charities like Sub for Santa was destroyed by fire Saturday.

The fire at Don McKee's toy and gift shop on Blue Bench north of Duchesne started about 3 p.m., according to Duchesne County Sheriff's Lt. Jeremy Curry.

McKee was adding wood to a wood-burning stove in the shop and the fire got away from him, Curry said. McKee was able to get out of the shop without injury, the lieutenant said.

Firefighters from Duchesne and Altamont put the fire out. McKee's nearby home was not damaged in the fire but his shop and everything in it is a total loss, Curry said.

A GoFundMe page* was set up after the fire to help rebuild the shop.

"Don McKee has spent 40 years doing what he loves and helping with Sub for Santa," according to the page. "This means so much to him because he has done it most his life."
