SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City's first protected intersection is now up and running, and the community finished up a party Saturday to celebrate the opening.
According to People For Bikes, a protected intersection is "a Dutch-style intersection between two streets with protected bike lanes."
The first "Biketoberfest" event closed the intersection at 200 West and 300 South for the party.
This is only the second protected intersection in the nation, and planners say the idea is to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by separating them from cars.
"There are already a lot of people walking and biking through this intersection, and we want to make it better for them and attract more people, so they can park their car, and walk and bike around downtown," transportation planner Colin Quinn-Hurst said.
Planners say they will study the intersection and consider expanding if it is working as planned.
