CACHE COUNTY — A 10-year-old boy was shot and killed in a hunting accident in Cache County Saturday, police said.

Just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Cache County Communications Center received a call that a young man had been accidentally shot in an area approximately one mile southeast of Red Spur, in the far southeast corner of the forest service area of Cache County, according to Cache County Sheriff's Office. A Life Flight helicopter was called along with Cache County Sheriff's office, Cache County Search and Rescue and Logan City Paramedics, police said.

Upon arrival, responders found a 10-year-old victim who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The victim had been sitting on the floorboard of a four-wheeler vehicle trying to stay out of the wind, police said, when a hunting companion pulled up next to him and attempted to remove his rifle from his own four-wheeler. The rifle discharged, impacting the victim, according to police.

The incident appears to have been an accident, and no charges are pending at this time, police said. The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification of family, friends and school authorities.

"As you can imagine, the family is devastated," Chief Deputy Matt Bilodeau of Cache County Sheriff's Office said. "During an outing meant to create memories, enjoy nature, and bring family and friends closer, to have something like this happen is just unimaginable. Please pray for their family."

More information will be released as it becomes available.
