MURRAY — The Utah Transit Authority is asking for the public's help to find a man and woman it believes have stolen more than a dozen cars from park and ride lots.

Police have pretty clear photos of two people who they think are stealing cars from these UTA lots in broad daylight.

"We're going to record you," said Lt. Gary McGrath of the Utah Transit Police. "We're going to ask for the media's help in identifying you. We're going to come after you and try and catch you."

Police said the pair in the surveillance photos is responsible for 13 auto thefts over the last two weeks.

They've swiped cars from UTA park and ride lots on the red and blue lines from the Ballpark Station to the end of the lines.

"We've got a lot of video and surveillance photos of these people coming and going from the cars and dropping them off and getting on the trains and riding the trains," McGrath said.

In the middle of the day when lots are full, the thieves go after Honda Civics and Accords from the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

"The parts on the cars are popular aftermarket accessories," McGrath said. "They've been high on the list for a number of years."

They use "shaved" keys to enter locked cars and start them up as quickly as if they had the real key.

"We're suspecting that maybe the vehicles have been taken to commit other crimes in, and we will be taking a look at that," he said.

Protect your car
If you drive an older car without modern security features, UTA recommends a locking device that goes on your steering wheel and turns the thieves away. They can cost as little as $20.

Transit police have made five arrests for car theft so far this year.

Anyone with information about the car thieves should call UTA's tip line at 801-287-EYES.
