JENSEN, Uintah County — A 17-year-old Uintah County girl was injured Tuesday when she crashed an ATV and was thrown 30 feet from the vehicle.

The teen lost control of the ATV about 4:40 p.m. when she went around a school bus that had stopped on Brush Creek Road in Jensen, according to Uintah County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Fletcher.

The ATV went off the road and the girl was thrown clear of the vehicle, landing 30 feet away, Fletcher said. The ATV then rolled "end over end multiple times," he said.

The girl, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal. Fletcher did not know the extent of her injuries or have an update on her condition Wednesday.

It remained unclear Wednesday why the school bus was stopped in the road and if there were any children on the bus at the time of the ATV crash, Fletcher said, adding that deputies are still collecting witness statements.

Deputies believe speed was a factor in the crash.
