GRANTSVILLE — We all have wishes, hopes and dreams.

Many times those hopes only stay in our hearts as we wish the best for our loved ones and plan for our futures. Traditionally, releasing lit paper lanterns has been a physical manifestation of desired good fortune, and the tradition continued in Utah on Sept. 12 with Lantern Fest.

Thousands attended the event at the Bonneville Seabase property, which means thousands of glowing sky lanterns were released en masse into a dark sky in an awe-inspiring display.

If you weren't able to attend and experience the spectacle, two Utah videographers have you covered. Kasey LaRose and Tyler Cahoon of Circa3.com (who are not connected with the event) took stunning footage with traditional digital methods and a drone, respectively, and it truly is a sight to see.

It's hard not to compare it to the lantern-release scene from Disney's "Tangled." But one might argue LaRose and Cahoon's video has the edge on Disney magic because they captured real-life magic.

The Lantern Fest was arranged by Sack Lunch Productions, which hosts sky lantern releases across the country. To ensure the safety of communities and surrounding lands, the company worked with the proper authorities for permissions and for test runs to assess fire risk. It also uses biodegradable balloons and employs "lantern chasers" who collect about 90 percent of the lanterns released at its events.

Sky lanterns aren't permitted in some jurisdictions in Utah nor on state lands. Check with your city and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands before attempting to light sky lanterns outside of an approved event.
