TAYLORSVILLE — Police counted 19 bullets that were shot into a room where a 1-year-old girl was sleeping.
On Friday, after weeks of investigating, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office filed 29 counts of discharge of a firearm — one for every shell casing recovered at the scene — against Tyrel Maleek Foreman, 19, of West Jordan. All charges against Foreman, who goes by the moniker "Lucky-Loc," are second-degree felonies and carry potential gang-enhancement penalties.
On July 21, multiple shots were fired into David Hall's apartment, 4545 S. Atherton Drive (1075 West). Hall's 1-year-old daughter was sleeping in one room and his 2-year-old son was in another. The only thing that saved his daughter, he said, was her crib was pressed directly against the wall under the window, and the exterior wall below the window sill was made of brick.
"Officers located 29 spent shell casings, including 9mm, .22 caliber and .25 caliber," charging documents state. "Officers determined 19 bullets entered a room where an 18-month-old was sleeping, narrowly missing the child's crib."
Unified police believe the shooting was a result of mistaken identity and that Hall and his family were not the intended targets.
Hall had only lived in the apartment for three months. He moved out immediately after the shooting. Neighbors told him that one of the previous tenants may have been dealing drugs from his apartment.
A witness observed two men drive up to the apartment in a Honda Accord, get out and shoot. Detectives later received information from a "jailhouse informant" who provided information that had not been released publicly, according to the charges.
