BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A fatal crash closed SR-190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon Friday morning.
Lewis R. Davis, a 57-year-old Taylorsville resident, died after his truck veered off a cliff at about 7:30 a.m., according to investigators. They said Davis was the only person in the vehicle.
Multiple people called 911 to report seeing Davis' truck go over the edge of the mountain at the top of Guardsman Pass, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office.
"They said as they crested the mountain summit, the bright sunlight nearly blinded them, making it difficult to see the roadway," a statement from the sheriff's office reads. "In addition, they stated they felt Mr. Davis may have similarly been unable to properly see the roadway because of the bright sunlight."
After watching the truck roll to the bottom of the pass, multiple witnesses "traversed the steep mountainside, located the driver and provided CPR and other kind assistance," according to the sheriff's office. Davis died at the scene of the accident.
SR-190 eastbound was closed at Guardsman's Pass for several hours while emergency crews worked to access the vehicle.
