SALT LAKE CITY — Charges were filed Wednesday against a man who this week allegedly pretended he was a police officer and tried to force his way into a home before being detained with his own handcuffs.

Reed Glenn Grover, 42, is charged in Utah's 3rd District Court with burglary, a second-degree felony, impersonating a police officer, a class B misdemeanor, and assault, also a class B misdemeanor.

Police say Grover, of West Jordan, flashed a fake police badge at the backdoor of a home at 733 E. Kensington Avenue in Salt Lake City around 6 a.m. Monday and announced "Police!"

Two homeowners suspected Grover was not actually an officer, according to Salt Lake City police. One of the residents reportedly used the handcuffs Grover had brought with him to subdue him.

Grover was not wearing any kind of uniform at the time, Salt Lake City police said. Charges filed against Grover allege he showed his victims his badge twice "very quickly" through the back window and then pushed the back door open and entered the home.

The badge did not appear (to the victims) to be an authentic police badge.

–Charging documents

"The badge did not appear (to the victims) to be an authentic police badge," Grover's charging documents read.

Grover was also injured during a physical struggle with the person who took his handcuffs, police reported. A booking photo at the Salt Lake County Jail shows Grover with a bruised and swollen right eye and multiple cuts to his forehead.

No initial court date is currently set in Grover's case.
