ST. GEORGE — An 86-year-old man and his dog died after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the street Wednesday morning, police said.

Gerald Gilsdorf was crossing Sunset Boulevard near 1400 West while walking his dog at about 7:15 a.m. when he was struck by a car making a left turn, according to the St. George Police Department. Investigators said Gilsdorf was in the center turn lane when the vehicle, which was turning onto 1400 West, hit him while traveling about 20 to 25 mph.

Gilsdorf's injuries were treated on the scene before he was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center and then flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas by a medical helicopter. Police said Gilsdorf died from his injuries in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

The incident is still under investigation and police said the driver, who was uninjured in the crash, could face criminal charges. Investigators also said they believe the early-morning sunlight may have played a role in the collision.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the St. George Police Department by calling 435-627-4300.
