SALT LAKE COUNTY — Police are investigating a shooting in which bullets narrowly missing a young man inside an apartment.

Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Monoco Apartments, near 4100 South and 500 East, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lt. Bill Robertson of the Unified Police Department. Investigators believe two rival gangs are responsible for the incident.

"We had some witnesses on scene that saw two groups of possible gang members confront each other, have some words, then the next thing we know we had shots fired," Robertson said.

Five to six shots were fired, he said.

Bullets flew through the complex and into at least one apartment, breaking the window and leaving large holes in a bedroom wall.

A tenant of the apartment that was damaged by bullets, Jay Best, said his son could feel hot metal on his face as the bullets flew through the window and into the wall.

"I just heard my son come and say, 'Hey, our house has been shot up and there's a bullet hole through our window,'" Best said.

No one was injured and no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Robertson said two apartments were damaged in the incident.
