SALT LAKE CITY — Two cats were rescued from a burning home Friday afternoon and are expected to live, officials said.
Salt Lake City Fire Department crews responded to the house fire at on the 1100 block of Arapahoe Avenue just before 11 a.m., according to Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Jasen Asay. The fire burned and heavily damaged the back of the two-story house before moving to the attic.
The three adult occupants were home at the time of the fire, but were able to safely evacuate before fire crews arrived, Asay said. Firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes and kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes.
After they extinguished the flames, firefighters found two cats in the home that were having difficulty breathing. Firefighters gave the cats specialty-sized oxygen masks. Both animals recovered and are expected to live, Asay said.
The cats were reunited with their owners. One of the occupants was evaluated on scene for possible smoke inhalation, but wasn't transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no damage estimates have yet been released.
