SALE LAKE CITY — A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle while walking in the middle of a road near downtown Salt Lake City early Saturday morning, police said.

At about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, police received a call for an automobile-pedestrian accident at 771 North Victory Road, according to Lt. Michael Ross of Salt Lake City Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 23-year-old male lying in the southbound lane of Victory Road after being struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, Ross said. The man died at the scene.

The deceased was wearing only dark clothing and was walking in the middle of the road, making it very difficult for the driver of the vehicle to see him, Ross said. Police are unsure where the man was walking to or from, and are working to determine why he was in the middle of the road.

The victim of the accident has been identified, but his name has not yet been released pending notification of his family, according to Ross.

There were no signs of impairment with the driver of the vehicle, Ross said.

Victory Road is currently closed due to the incident, but is expected to reopen by roughly 10:00 a.m. local time.
