LAPOINT, Uintah County — Three people escaped serious injury Tuesday despite a near head-on crash just east of Lapoint, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 4:30 p.m. when a Vernal man driving a pickup truck east on state Road 121 tried to pass more than one vehicle in a no-passing zone, troopers said.
The driver of the pickup pulled left onto the shoulder once to avoid oncoming traffic and then resumed his illegal passing, troopers said. The truck was still in the wrong lane when a Lapoint man heading west in a sedan came around a corner, according to investigators.
Both drivers tried to avoid the crash, but swerved into the same ditch and collided, troopers said.
Firefighters extricated the driver of the car and he was taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center with injuries to his left hip and left shoulder.

The driver of the pickup truck was issued a citation. Neither he nor his passenger went to the hospital by ambulance, according to troopers, who noted that everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
