WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested a man they said burglarized a car, forced his way into a West Valley City home and assaulted a woman.

Joseph Ryan Petit was arrested after police said he forced his way into a home near 2000 West and 4000 South Sunday morning. Petit removed a screen on a window to the bathroom and made entry into the home where he began looking through the house, according to police.

A woman inside the home heard noises and saw a man in the home. Police said Petit cut her with a knife and then sexually assaulted her.

Other men living in the home heard the woman screaming and came upstairs. Police said Petit injured one of the other men in the house when he attempted to stop the intruder. Petit took off, but police were able to catch up with him and make the arrest.

Police believe Petit was intoxicated during the incident.
