LAYTON — A man who got into an argument with his mother before police say he stabbed his neighbor with a kitchen knife was arrested Friday.

The incident began about 7:30 a.m. at the Quail Cove Apartment complex, 272 W. Antelope Drive. Hector Lazaro, 29, who lives in the apartment with his mother and adult brother, got into an argument with his mother, said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.

"It escalates to the point the mom is pretty concerned about her safety," Lyman said.

The mother yelled to the brother to lock himself in his room and call 911 while she ran out the door to get help.

"The suspect tries to get at his brother who is locked in the bedroom. He has a knife, but is not able to get in there," Lyman said.

Lazaro then walked over to his neighbor's apartment.

"Just opens the door, goes in, confronts this woman and ends up stabbing her in the chest," Lyman said.

Lazaro then went back to his own apartment where he stayed until police arrived and arrested him.

The neighbor was being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening at University Hospital, the lieutenant said.

Lazaro's family told investigators that he suffers from some mental health issues, Lyman said.

"According to the family, he does have several diagnoses and medication prescribed that they suspect he wasn't taking."

The initial fight allegedly started because "the mom was making too much noise and the son was upset about it," he said.

Police said they have had no other history with Lazaro at that address. He was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of attempted murder.
