SANDY — A fire destroyed one home and damaged another Thursday night, officials said.
Firefighters were called at 8:40 p.m. about a home near 1200 East on Elswood Avenue fully engulfed in flames, said Sandy Fire Chief Derek Maxfield.
Crews worked to protect a home next door, where outdoor siding was melting, Maxfield said. That home suffered about $15,000 in damage.
There were no injuries in the fire. Maxfield said he isn't sure how many people live at the destroyed home, which was being rented.
A neighbor saved the residents' pets from the fire. Ron Demill said he was driving through his neighborhood on the way home when he saw smoke down the road. He went to see what was happening, saw the home on fire, and rescued a dog and some birds, he said.
Fire officials were still working to determine the cause of the blaze Thursday night.
