SYRACUSE — Police are asking for help to identify the person responsible for the death of a thoroughbred mare valued at more than $10,000.

The horse, which is a registered thoroughbred brood mare, was found lying on the ground with a large wound in its side at about 5 p.m. Thursday, according to Syracuse police officer Erin Behm. The horse was in an 80-acre pasture, located at 2600 West and 2850 South, with several other horses at the time of its death.

“She was very valued by me — not just monetarily but emotionally,” said Ken Beaumont, the horse’s owner. “My kids loved her, too.”

The horse, named Lady Antebellum, was only 6 years old, according to Beaumont. He claimed she has multiple triple-crown competitors in her bloodline, including Secretariat. He planned to breed the mare in a few months.

“She was just magnificent the way she carried herself,” he said. “She knew she was all that. She pranced when she walked.”

Beaumont, who works in the Texas oil fields, was informed of the horse’s death on the phone by the pasture’s owner. He said it appeared someone shot the horse with an arrow, although the incident is still under investigation.

Behm said it appeared the horse was killed a couple of hours before police arrived on scene. Anyone with information about the incident can contact police by calling 801-825-4400.
