OGDEN — In honor of National Train Day and Utah State Archeology and Preservation Month, the Union Station Foundation will host its Heritage Fest on Saturday.

With the price of one museum admission, visitors will have access to all four museums at the Union Station, entertainment and a variety of activities for kids and adults, according to Elizabeth Sutton, executive director of the Union Station Foundation.

The grand opening for a new, hands-on kids area in the Utah State Railroad Museum will also be held at the event.

The new Workin’ on the Railroad Discovery Zone will help kids learn about things like what it takes to work on a railroad, how steam works in a steam engine and different railroad lantern signals. There is even an “old-school ticket counter” in the area, Sutton said.

“I think I’m excited about it because of the activities we have. It’s hard today to keep kids' interest, especially when you start talking about history because everybody thinks that all these things happened so long ago,” Sutton said. “And so we’re trying to show that it can be fun, it can be active, you can dig up history and learn about it. You can contribute your own stories to our history and we can have them in our archives.”

Additional kids activities include a classic car pinewood derby, a mock archeology dig and more. The winners of the pinewood derby will receive a gift card and a ride around Ogden in a classic car from the Browning-Kimball Classic Car Museum, Sutton said.

An event targeted at adults is recording personal stories. The Utah State University Folklore program will give those attending an opportunity to bring in their own stories, put them in the archives and make them part of Union Station’s history.

Sutton said history is engaging and fun, “especially (because) the history of Utah is so diverse and this gives all those diverse groups the chance to celebrate their heritage in one location.”

Local musicians and performers, including Dennis Guy, Tanner Bray, Tom Bennett, Jensen Buck, Weber State First Nation Society, and more will entertain guests. Guests will also be able to purchase food and beverages from Coffee Links, Union Grill and The Crazy Enchilada.

Several model trains, a quilt exhibit and demonstration and an African-American historical photograph exhibit will also be at the event.

This event will take place Saturday at The Union Station, 2501 Wall Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If it is raining, the event will be held indoors. For more information about the event, visit the Union Station website.

Tickets for this event cost $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students and $3 for kids. A family pass costs $15 and Union Station members are free.
