SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol spent most of Friday morning cleaning up a single-vehicle rollover involving seven cars.

About 4:30 a.m. on I-80 near the Salt Lake County and Tooele County borders, a semitruck hauling seven vehicles rolled. UHP Sgt. Chamberlin Neff said the 51-year-old driver, who apparently was not familiar with the area, took a turn too fast.

"Decided to drive off the road on the left shoulder, impacted some concrete barriers and at that time began to fishtail and actually impacted the (state Route) 201 structure and lost one of the vehicles off of the trailer, and at that time he separated his tractor from his trailer," Neff said.

The driver, who did not suffer serious injuries, climbed out of his cab through the windshield, Neff said.

Another motorist who was behind the trailer, hit the initial car that fell off. There were no serious injuries in that crash, according to the UHP.

The semitruck was hauling used vehicles, including a Prius and an SUV. Eastbound I-80 was closed for 4 ½ hours while crews cleaned up the wreckage. The driver was cited for investigation of unsafe lane travel.
