SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested Wednesday after fleeing from a convenience store where he allegedly stole a hat.

Palu William Lose took a Detroit Lions baseball hat from the Quality Quik Stop located at 910 N. 900 West in Salt Lake City while an accomplice stole money from a quarter machine at about 11:30 a.m., according to a probable cause statement. When officers arrived, Lose allegedly refused to comply with police commands and put the truck he was driving in reverse.

“(Lose) almost struck an officer and a witness with the vehicle while in reverse,” the probable cause statement reads. “The officer had to run out of the way of (Lose’s) vehicle and push the witness out of the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle in reverse.”

Lose then backed into a phone phone before driving toward another officer at a high rate of speed, according to the report. Police said the officer had to run to avoid being hit by Lose.

Police pursued Lose in a patrol car until he crashed into a parked car and fled on foot, according to the probable cause statement. Investigators said he was taken into custody after a short foot chase. They reported finding a toy gun in a bag in his possession and a working gun in the truck he was driving.

Lose was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of hit and run, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, fleeing on foot, and theft, according to Salt Lake Police detective Cody Lougy. He said there were several “small” outstanding warrants for Lose’s arrest.
