LOGAN, Utah (AP) — The Logan mayor is considering a deer management program to prevent the city from being overrun by its growing deer population.
The Herald Journal reports that Mayor Craig Petersen is thinking about a program similar to the trap-and-release strategy that began this February in North Logan.
The Division of Wildlife Resources said that city captured 30 deer during about four weeks. The animals were tagged and relocated to Hardware Ranch, west Box Elder County and the Bear Lake Area.
One male returned and was re-captured.
Petersen said he would hold a public hearing and talk with other trap-and-release cities and DWR before implementing the program.
The mayor said he doesn't want to eliminate all urban deer, but that the optimal deer number is lower than the current population.
