WASHINGTON COUNTY — A 71-year-old male from Smithfield, UT was having major medical problems on Sunday while driving alone in a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Those complications led to several accidents in Southern Utah.

The man had been reported to local police as driving erratically and veering off into oncoming traffic. Washington County deputies alongside officers from the Hurricane City Police and La Verkin City Police attempted to stop his vehicle over the course of several miles.

The Monte Carlo struck one vehicle on SR-9 near 3400 West State Street and ultimately collided head-on with a stationary construction vehicle near 300 S State Street in La Verkin, UT. The impact with the parked construction vehicle is what brought the incident to a halt.

Damage was also done to signage and construction traffic cones as the man drove from the I-15 Exit 16 on SR-9 to 300 South State Street in La Verkin.

Medical personnel treated the driver at the scene, and no serious injuries were reported in either of the other vehicles involved.

The accident is still under investigation. Because the incident was health related, the name of the driver will not be released at this time.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have been a factor.
