KEARNS — A toddler was killed Friday morning after being hit by a vehicle in a driveway, police said.

The accident occurred around 10:45 a.m. near 5000 S. 4400 West, according to Unified Fire Authority. A 63-year-old man, the girl's grandfather, went outside to take his trash to the curb. But to do that, he had to pull his pickup truck out of a carport, according to Unified police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

Unbeknownst to the man, his granddaughter Kendra Moad had walked out the door behind him. When he pulled his truck forward, he accidentally ran over the girl, Hoyal said.

Kendra received severe head trauma and was unconscious when medical crews arrived on scene, Unified fire said.

She was transported to an area hospital and died from the injuries, Hoyal said.

National non-profit organization, Kids And Cars, reports that in the U.S., 50 children are backed over by vehicles every week and in more than 70 percent of the accidents, a parent or close relative is driving. In 60 percent of the accident, a large-sized vehicle is involved. The predominant age of the victims is 12-23 months, according to the organization.

Primary Children's Hospital also notes that more accidents occur in driveways during the summertime as kids go outside to play more.
