FARMINGTON — A Layton man has pleaded guilty to violently shaking his girlfriend's infant daughter, killing her.
Tyler Ryan Geary, 26, pleaded guilty in 2nd District Court Thursday to a reduced charge of child abuse homicide, a second-degree felony, as well as child abuse inflicting serious injury, a second-degree felony.
The homicide charge was originally filed as a first-degree felony.
Geary was caring for 11-month-old Aliyah Faye Wild, his girlfriend's daughter, at their Layton residence while the mother was at work on Sept. 10, 2013. After apparently becoming frustrated with the infant's crying, Geary picked up Aliyah "by the armpits with the child facing him," and shook her for approximately 30 to 40 seconds in an effort to get her to stop crying, then dropped her onto a bed, charging documents state.
When Geary picked the girl up and shook her again, she was unresponsive.
Aliyah underwent emergency surgery to try and relieve the pressure on her brain from swelling. She was taken off life support and died seven days later.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 7.
