SPANISH FORK — Police have identified the man killed after a semitruck carrying coal rolled on U.S. 6 Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

At about 3:20 p.m., a Honda Element was heading eastbound on U.S. 6 near Covered Bridge in Spanish Fork Canyon when it crossed the center divider and hit a westbound semitruck head-on, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The semitruck overturned, spilling coal onto both sides of the freeway.

The driver of the Honda was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, UHP reported. Sgt. Todd Royce from UHP identified the victim Tuesday night as 19-year-old Arik Mack from Mapleton.

The Honda was also carrying a passenger, and the semitruck was carrying two people, according to UHP. Both occupants of the semitruck were injured, but it was unclear Tuesday what the extent of those injuries are or if the passenger in the Honda was injured.

The accident downed power lines in the area and also damaged a railroad control box, UHP said.

The road was closed in both directions for a time. The westbound lanes reopened at about 5:30 p.m., but the eastbound lanes at the U.S. 6 and U.S. 89 junction are expected to remain closed until after 10 p.m.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
