SALT LAKE CITY — Police say they located and arrested a man who was identified by DNA analysis after a credit union robbery in 2013.
The robbery occurred Nov. 26, 2013 at the University Federal Credit Union, according to Salt Lake City police. A man entered the credit union, approached a teller and demanded cash. After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled eastbound to a nearby business, police said.
Detectives used DNA analysis and video surveillance and identified the robber as 49-year-old Tracy Scott Velarde, according to police. Velarde has ties to Salt Lake City and Duchesne.
After seeing recent media coverage about Velarde, a citizen recognized him and called Salt Lake City police. Officers located Velarde near 1300 South and 600 East and took him into custody. Velarde spit on an officer while being detained, police said.
Velarde was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail in connection with several outstanding warrants, including robbery and assault of a police officer.
“A big thank you to the media and the public for helping us locate Mr. Velardo,” police said.
