ROY — A Roy man is in critical condition Sunday after being burned over 60-70 percent of his body.

"Our investigation this morning did find that he set the fire," said Roy Fire Chief Jason Poulsen. "He poured gasoline inside of his garage, went inside, lit something from the gas stove, went into the garage to light the gasoline on fire, the fumes of the gasoline exploded. That's where he received all of his burns."

When Roy police arrived, they saw the man on fire in the home. An officer grabbed a blanket and snuffed out the flames and got him outside into the yard for treatment.

Police and fire officials worked together to get the man medical attention and put out the flames that were shooting 40 feet high out of the garage.

"When the fire department showed up, they unrolled some hoses and started rendering medical aid to the victim," said Roy police officer Matthew Gwynn. "At that point, the police officers took over, grabbed the hoses and started fighting the fire until other agencies could get on scene."

The man was flown to the hospital in critical condition. A woman was also in the home at the time of the fire, but she was not injured.

Firefighters contained the fire to the garage.

Investigators are looking into exactly what happened and say charges may or may not be filed, depending on their findings.
