WEST VALLEY CITY — Police identified a man who died in a fire at his West Valley apartment Saturday.

Leland Roy Ivy, 64, was smoking on his couch at the Valley Fair apartment complex at 3060 W. 3650 South when he fell asleep around 10 a.m., investigators said. The lit cigarette ignited the blaze.

A neighbor who was walking by smelled smoke and ultimately tracked it to Ivy’s apartment. He tried to open the apartment, which was locked, and called 911 when he received no response from Ivy.

"It was a pretty active fire and the smoke level was pretty much to the ground," said West Valley Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Fox. "They knocked the fire down and did a quick search and couldn’t find anyone."

Once the fire was extinguished, crews did a secondary search and located Ivy’s body. No one else was hurt and no other apartments were damaged in the fire, according to investigators.
