WEST VALLEY CITY — A man who said he heard "banging" on his door about 12:30 a.m. was shot shortly after opening it, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The incident happened on the 3500 block of Parkway Blvd. West Valley police spokesman Roxanne Vainuku said four people were in the apartment at the time. There was a knock at the door and one of the men answered.

"He opened the door and the suspect shot him," she said.

The victim was shot once in an area between his shoulder and neck, Vainuku said. But no one in the apartment called police. Officers responded after neighbors heard the shot fired and called 911, she said.

When police arrived, they found the apartment door was open and they could hear commotion inside. They entered to find the gunshot victim who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Vainuku said.

Police say the gunman is believed to be a light-skinned Hispanic or white male in his mid-20s, about 5-foot-7 and was last seen wearing a light blue jacket or shirt and blue baseball cap. Other tenants reported seeing a man and a woman together in the area, Vainuku said, leading investigators to believe the gunman may have had an accomplice.

There was preliminary evidence that the suspect and victim knew each other and that the shooting was not random, she said. Police reported that the occupants of the apartment had not been cooperative with investigators.

Vainuku said police had been called to that apartment unit before.
