Rescuers recall 'distinct voice' that spurred them to rescue trapped toddler

Four Spanish Fork police officers all said they heard it.

"We've gotten together and just talkin' about it, and all four of us can swear that we heard somebody inside the car saying, ‘Help,’ ” officer Jared Warner recalled Sunday.

But when they flipped the vehicle resting on its hood in the Spanish Fork River onto its side Saturday, they discovered there was no one inside able to speak.

Bloody Sunday 50th anniversary: Thousands crowd Selma bridge

Selma paid tribute Sunday to the late President Lyndon Johnson for the 1965 Voting Rights Act, recalling the clashes between police and marchers 50 years ago in this Alabama city that helped secure those equal voting protections.

Police beat and tear-gassed marchers at the foot of the bridge in Selma on March 7, 1965, in a spasm of violence that shocked the nation. The attack on demonstrators preceded the Selma-to-Montgomery march, which occurred two weeks later. Both helped build momentum for congressional approval of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

Luci Baines Johnson accepted the award Sunday from Selma city officials on behalf of her father, saying it meant so much to her a half century later to see him honored for the landmark act.

Ogden police shoot dog that allegedly charged officers

Ogden police shot a dog Saturday after two officers said it charged at them while they were conducting a separate investigation.

Three officers were called to a residence at 165 17th St. about 8:40 p.m. on a report of some type of disturbance. Moments after the officers had finished their investigation and were walking away, a pit bull managed to slip out the door, said Ogden Police Lt. Will Cragon.

As of Sunday, there was no indication that the dog was purposely let out of the residence, he said.

Photos: Local puppies start journey to becoming law enforcement dogs

Seven puppies started their journey toward becoming law enforcement dogs Saturday.

At a “puppy placement ceremony” in Ogden, volunteers with local nonprofit Havoc K9 met the dogs they will be training in their homes for the next year. The organization raises puppies and trains them to work with law enforcement and first responders before giving the dogs to local agencies free of charge.

“It’s one of the most selfless acts you can ever do for your community, to put your time and effort into these dogs and then give them to the communities to keep (the community) safe,” said Havoc K9 founder Ricki Draper.

Contentious 'Utah Cares' bill gets House approval

After a contentious debate Friday, the House passed Utah Cares, the GOP leadership's counter to Gov. Gary Herbert's Healthy Utah alternative to Medicaid expansion.

Democrats made another unsuccessful attempt to bring back the governor's more expansive plan for providing health care to low-income Utahns. Healthy Utah has Senate approval, but was defeated in a House committee earlier this week.

House Majority Whip Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, told representatives before the vote they should "feel free" to oppose Utah Cares, but called it "analogous to the guy in the desert who walks past a glass of water because he wants a gallon."
