DRAPER — Several lanes were closed on northbound I-15 Friday night after a vehicle hit a barrier and caught fire.
The accident occurred just before midnight near the 12300 South exit on I-15, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper. A white van was traveling northbound on I-15 and began to merge to take the 12300 South exit. A silver passenger car was traveling behind the van and suddenly veered to the right and drove into the van, Hopper said.
The collision caused the van to veer right and crash into the concrete barrier, causing it to burst into flames.
Both drivers involved in the accident were able to get out of their vehicles and there were no injuries, Hopper said. Several lanes were closed while firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire.
Upon further investigation, the driver of the silver passenger car said his watch got caught on the steering wheel, causing him to veer into the van, Hopper said. Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
