DRAPER — A break in a 14-inch water line collapsed a stretch of 12300 South near State Street on Tuesday.

Eastbound lanes on 12300 South from I-15 to 300 East could be shut down until morning, Draper police announced Tuesday night as they responded to the break that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Westbound traffic was being allowed through the area, but drivers were urged to avoid the area, including to and from I-15.

WaterPro is a subsidiary of the Draper Irrigation Co.

Water spilling from the broken water main dropped the city's 7 million gallon water tank a full 2 feet, according to WaterPro CEO Darrin Jensen. WaterPro, which owns the water line, managed to quickly restore water pressure to much of Draper, but many businesses near the break were left without water late into the night.

"It really took all of the pressure throughout most of our system," Jensen said. "So, really, people had water. They just had zero water pressure."

WaterPro estimated it could take until after midnight to fully restore service.

Ias Summerhays, part owner of Guadalahonky's and Donkey Tails Cantina, watched the situation unfold outside his business, which ended up shutting its doors Tuesday night.

"It was probably a good 30 or 40 yards of water backed up," Summerhays said. "It's been kind of a nightmare for us, for our family business."

Crews were working into the night pumping water out of the ground and preparing the road for repair.

Draper Police Sgt. Scott Adams said work crews and officers were in for "a long night and a cold night" as they worked in the area. Police are asking drivers to find alternate routes for their morning commutes.

"This covers two of our main intersections right here on 12300 and Factory Outlet Drive," Adams said.

The cause of the break was still being investigated Tuesday night.
