OGDEN — A man was shot and killed Monday evening and police identified the victim Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 7 p.m. Monday, police received several 911 calls reporting a shooting in the 3500 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to Ogden police. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered 34-year-old Steven C. Ferguson lying in the street, police said.

Ferguson was transported to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Information has not been released about the number of shots fired or where Ferguson was shot.

Ogden police said a man was seen fleeing the scene. Police are searching for a white male wearing a white T-shirt, dark colored jeans and possibly a baseball cap. The man was last seen leaving the scene heading north on foot.

The case is being investigated by Ogden Police Department Major Crimes detectives along with investigators from the Weber County Homicide Task Force. Officers were trying to retrace Ferguson's steps Tuesday and canvased the area, talking to neighbors. Police said he did not live in the area but was known to visit friends that live nearby.

A motive for the shooting was unknown Tuesday. Utah state court records show Ferguson had a long criminal history. He was first sentenced to the Utah State Prison in 1999 and was last discharged from the prison in 2007.

Ferguson was involved in a high-profile gang fight in 2003 that resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy who was playing at a park when he was hit in the head by a stray bullet. Jesse Martinez was shot as he sat with his mother at Monroe Park nearly two blocks away from the fight. Ferguson was not charged directly with the boy's death but was convicted of felony riot and was ordered to serve up to five years in prison.

In 1999, Ferguson was convicted of two counts of felony discharge of a firearm from a vehicle. He was sentenced to up to five years in prison. In 2003 he was convicted of felony riot and was ordered to serve up to five years at the state prison.

Ferguson's other court cases involved a series of misdemeanor crimes, according to court records.

Anyone with information about the incident or the gunman's whereabouts can call Ogden police at 801-629-8221.
