TAYLORSVILLE — The Fremont girls basketball team is a program with a long and distinguished history.

The defending 5A state champions entered Friday's semifinals against American Fork at Salt Lake Community College with eyes on adding another title to its collection.

The Cavemen had different ideas, and they held a 15-12 halftime lead.

Still, Fremont’s big-game experience helped lift the team to Saturday’s state final, as the Silver Wolves picked up a 38-37 victory over the Cavemen — their second consecutive one-point victory.

The game was a defensive battle from the beginning as neither team scored in the double digits in a quarter in the first half. However, Fremont erupted for 16 points in the third quarter to take a 28-23 lead — a quarter that set the ultimate advantage.

Rylee Thompson and Harley Hansen, who scored 11 points each, led Fremont. Shelbee Molen also contributed, scoring 10 points. American Fork’s Paige Farnsworth led the Cavemen, notching a game-high 15 points.

Fremont advances to face Brighton in the state final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salt Lake Community College.

BRIGHTON 43, RIVERTON 31 — The Bengals dominated the Riverton Silver Wolves, winning 43-31 to advance to the state finals.

Brighton held a narrow 11-10 lead after the first quarter but outscored Riverton 22-8 over the next two quarters to take a 33-18 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Bengals’ McCall Christensen led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kirsten Spencer finished with 11 points.
