HOLLADAY — A woman charged with setting her apartment on fire was reportedly upset that her son had moved out, according to a newly released search warrant.

On Jan. 22, four Unified police officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation after going door-to-door of the Lincoln Colonial Apartments, 1340 E. 4750 South, to lead tenants to safety.

Investigators believe the large fire was started by KayLene Shepherd, 47, inside her unit. She was charged Feb. 5 with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony.

According to a search warrant released late last week, Shepherd had found out the night before that her son had left to live with his father in Indiana.

"I believe KayLene Shepherd became very upset and lost control of her emotions," the investigating officer wrote in his search warrant affidavit.

Investigators believe Shepherd poured lighter fluid on both ends of her couch in the living room, on her son's bed and on her own bed, and then ignited them, according to the warrant.

Shepherd left the apartment complex before police and firefighters arrived. She was involved in another incident about six hours later and taken to a local hospital, according to the warrant.
