SALT LAKE CITY — Former Ballet West art director John Hart died on Thursday at the age of 93. He was the company’s artistic director for 11 years from 1986-1997.

He is credited for turning Ballet West into a reputable “world-renown” company, according to the Ballet West’s press release. He was only one of five artistic directors in the company has had during its 51 years.

“Mr. Hart’s contribution to Ballet West and to dance cannot be overstated,” the press release stated. "‘The Washington Times’ said, ‘Under John Hart, the dancers from Salt Lake City have blossomed into one of our national treasures.’”

Hart also served in the Royal Air Force during WWII and upon returning to ballet, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Award for Outstanding Achievement in Ballet. Subsequently, in 1955 John was appointed teacher and then served as Assistant Director of the Royal Ballet from 1962-1970, according to his obituary.

Before leaving England in 1971, Hart was honored by the queen with the title commander of the order of the British Empire, the press release stated.

“Mr. Hart was a remarkable man who made a difference in the lives of many people, and a lasting impact in the world of ballet,” the Ballet West statement noted.

A wake will be held at Stark Funeral Home at 3651 S. 900 East, Salt Lake City, on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 6-8 p.m.
