HENEFER, Summit County — A man who brandished a gun at officers during a pursuit in Henefer was charged with two felony counts of assaulting a peace officer, officials said Thursday.

The pursuit started in Morgan County on Feb. 6 after Jarred Keith York, 27, was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to the Summit County Attorney’s Office. York put his car into drive and headed east on I-84 when an officer attempted to take him into custody for an outstanding warrant for assault with substantial bodily injury, police said.

York and a female passenger were arrested Feb. 6 after a manhunt in Henefer. He was charged by the Summit County Attorney’s Office with two felony counts of assaulting a peace officer, one count of violating a protective order and one count of failing to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer.

During the search, police said they saw York retrieve a handgun from his pocket. They said it was later identified as a heavy metal pellet gun, which looked like a 1911 handgun.

“Deputies saw York stand up and raise the gun, point it at a deputy for a moment, then squat back down,” a statement from the Summit County Attorney’s Office reads. “York stood up a second time and pointed his handgun at a different deputy. Two deputies fired shots at York, but York was not hit.”

York’s bail was set at $250,000. He could face one to 15 years in the Utah State Prison, plus a $10,000 fine, for each second-degree felony assault charge, according to the attorney’s office. It reported that York appeared in court Thursday and was appointed counsel. His next court date was set for Feb. 23.

The female passenger, who had a protective order against York, was charged with one misdemeanor count of obstructing justice. She allegedly sent text messages to York during the pursuit informing him that police were looking for him, and that he should avoid the gas station where she was located.
