MURRAY — A fire erupted in a mechanic shop Tuesday when a man was welding.

The fire started about 7:15 p.m. when the owner of Khang Automotive Repair, 4550 S. Commerce Drive, accidentally burned himself while welding, Murray Deputy Fire Marshal Pat Killion reported.

When crews arrived to the two-alarm fire, there were already flames shooting out from the building's roof, Killion said.

The man was treated at University of Utah Hospital for second-degree burns and smoke inhalation.

The mechanic shop was ruled a total loss after crews spent more than an hour battling the blaze. Businesses on either side of the shop were also impacted by the fire, with damage including a collapsed ceiling, Killion said.

Crews remained on scene late Tuesday monitoring hot spots, including a fuel tank that was still burning.

"A mechanic's shop is full of nasty stuff that we're fully aware of, and we don't want it to touch off at all," Killion said.

The Utah Department of Transportation closed 300 West between 4500 South and 4800 South as crews fought the fire.
