WEST VALLEY CITY — A man sustained several facial lacerations Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk.

Witnesses said the driver, who was waiting in standstill traffic near 3455 S. 3600 West, looked as if he or she was going to drive through the center lane and advance toward the light. Then, according to the witnesses, the driver intentionally revved their engine and swerved to strike the 24-year-old pedestrian, according to Lt. Bill Merritt with the West Valley City Police Department.

The driver hit the man from behind, then sped through the parking lot of Denton Bowling Lanes and fled, Merritt said.

"After talking to witnesses and the victim, it appears it wasn't an accident but an aggravated assault," Merritt said.

Medical personnel responded to the scene to treat the man, who possibly has a broken nose. The man declined transportation to the hospital, Merritt said.

The victim told Merrit he doesn't know why the driver would hit him and he has no enemies, Merrit said.

Witnesses identified the car as a brown, 2-door vehicle, but police are still trying to obtain more information about the car and the driver, Merritt said.

If you have any information regarding this incident, you can call the West Valley City Police Department at 801-840-4000.

More details will be posted as they become available.
