WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested a man who they say fled from officers Monday, firing a gun as he went.

An officer spotted a stolen vehicle near 3200 West and 2855 South, but the driver sped off before the officer was able to attempt to stop him, West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

Another officer spotted the vehicle turning into an apartment complex at 3100 South and 3690 West about 3:50 p.m. The gate to the apartment complex parking lot was closed and the driver, identified as Carlos Grijalva, 20, jumped out of the car, fleeing on foot into the neighborhood.

"The officers ended up going into the neighborhood. They lost visual of the subject for just a minute, and that's when they reported hearing shots fired. Witnesses in the area said they heard shots fired as well," Vainuku said.

When the officers again caught sight of Grijalva and couldn't see a gun, they chased him down and caught him in the front yard of a home down the street, Vainuku said.

Police found a revolver in the yard and determined it had been fired twice. Two shell casings were also recovered.

Grijalva was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder, vehicle theft, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, possession of a firearm with a removed serial number and fleeing from police.

In November, Grijalva was charged in 3rd District Court with criminal trespass and theft of services, according to court records.
