MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE — A man, nicknamed by police as the “Beer Run Bandit," was arrested Dec. 31 after stealing two 18-packs of beer, according to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.
A man walked into a Pilot Flying J convenience store on Dec. 31, took two 18-packs of Bud Light from the cooler and left without paying, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said. Two store employees saw the theft and followed the man outside.
The man got into a truck in the parking lot and locked the doors of the vehicle. While an employee was checking the rear license plate, the man reversed at a high speed and the employee had to jump out of the way of the vehicle to avoid being hit, the sheriff’s office said.
The Weber County Sheriff’s Office issued an attempt to locate and a deputy located the truck in a hotel parking lot in Ogden. The man, identified as Matthew Howell, was discovered by police in a hotel room with a female and an “extensive amount of beer,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Based on the evidence in the room, it is believed the man has committed many similar crimes along the northern Wasatch Front,” a statement from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said.
Howell was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of theft, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery.
