Provo — Utah-based Vivint has laid off nearly 2 percent of its national workforce.

Headquartered in Provo, the company is a leading provider of smart home technology delivering services through a cloud-based platform that integrates a wide range of wireless features and components to provide home security, energy management and home automation. Today the company employs 7,000 people worldwide, including 3,000 seasonal sales reps and technicians.

However, this week's move would indicate a reduction in the overall number of employees.

"Recent organizational changes at Vivint Inc. resulted in the reduction of less than 2 percent of our employee base across North America,” said Starr Fowler, senior vice president of Human Resources in a prepared statement. “This difficult decision is part of a rebalancing of priorities to better position Vivint to support its growth in existing and new markets.”

The company declined a request for an interview or to provide details about the exact number of employees who are being cut, including the number of Utah employees. Those employees impacted by the change received severance packages to help with the transition, the statement said.

Originally founded in 1995 as APEX Marketing Group by Todd Pedersen and Keith Nellesen, the company was rebranded in 2010 as Vivint. In 2012, the Blackstone Group purchased Vivint for more than $2 billion. Last year, Vivint reported revenues of almost $501 million.
