SALT LAKE CITY — A Pleasant Grove man faces federal charges for allegedly stealing 42 guns from his employer.
An indictment alleges that beginning on an unknown date and continuing through Sept. 24, 2014, Shawn Phillip Hansen, 32, had stolen firearms in his possession. It also charges him with stealing the guns from a federal firearms licensee for whom he worked in Springville.
Hansen has pleaded not guilty. A trial is scheduled to start Jan. 26.
The case came to law enforcement's attention after the owner of the business noticed an antique gun missing from his inventory. On further inspection, he found more than 40 firearms missing and contacted police, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah.
Authorities say they located the guns at the home of a Hansen family member.
The weapons include two Taurus International .410-caliber revolvers, two Winchester rifles, six Colt pistols, three U.S.A. Military Surplus .30-06 rifles, and two Browning shotguns. The estimated value of the guns is about $100,000.
The potential maximum penalty for each count in the indictment is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Hansen was released with conditions following an initial appearance on the charges.
