SANDY — A man was in critical condition after what police say may have been a gang-related stabbing late Friday night.

Around 11:00 p.m., police responding to a 911 hang-up call from a cellphone in the area of 8831 S. 220 East found an 18-year-old man who had been stabbed in the abdomen, according to Sandy police Sgt. Dean Carriger.

The man was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition and his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Carriger said.

Police had difficulty obtaining information from the victim and witnesses who had fled the scene, according to Carriger.

“Due to the uncooperative nature of the individual, we’re still ensuring confirmation on his identity,” he said.

Sandy police planned to speak with the victim Saturday.

“With the victim’s condition, hospital staff indicated he would not be able to speak with us until some point today," Carriger said. "So, our information is limited and the investigation is just in the early stages.”

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
